Muslim Hikers: The Roaches, Peak District

Muslim Hikers invites you to the stunning Peak District to hike The Roaches.

The Roaches in Staffordshire is a Peak District gem; located above Leek and Tittesworth Reservoir, it’s loved by hikers and climbers alike. The impressively rugged and steep gritstone ridge is home to mythical mermaids and 15 metre natural gritstone clefts, so this is far more than your average countryside walk.

THE WALK

Car Parking: Roaches Tea Rooms & Restaurant, Paddock Farm, Roach Road, Upper Hulme, Leek, Staffordshire Moorlands ST13 8TY (Field next to the tea room)

PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY – (Car parking is limited so it’s important to arrive on time)

Walk distance/Duration:

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Easy – This is a fairly easy walk suitable for people of all walking abilities. As always, being physially trained will help you enjoy the experience more.

Starting from the car park, we walk along the road, before getting on the trail. We will then face a very steep incline, with a bit of scrambling, to the top of Hen Cloud (410m). This part is optional and we can provide an alternative, non scrambling route for those who want something not as difficult. At the top of Hen Cloud we will stop for a well deserved break and to take in some of the views.

This is followed by a gentle descent before we start trekking up the Roaches. This ascent is much more gradual. We will carry on up until we reach the trig point (505m). Again, we will stop here for some pictures and a short break. If the weather is good, we will stop here for a prayer break. We then carry on north west to Hazelwood Road. There we will have our lunch break. Following this, we shall start the return journey back to the cars and to The Roaches Cafe for those who might like to relax and network before the journey home.

The route is 9.5 miles long and should take approximatley 5 hours to complete.

You should expect to be finished by 3pm.

KIT LIST

Hiking boots with ankle support recommended, rucksack, waterproof jacket & trousers, extra layers, water bottle & packed lunch. You will be sent a full kit list via email.

OTHER NOTES

– Tickets are STRICTLY non transferable and non refundable .

– Please note professional photography & videography may be in place. Content may be shared by ourselves and third parties for marketing purposes. If you do not wish to be photographed, please let us know on the day of the trek.
