Learn about Islamophobia, how this affects people of a Muslim faith and what we can all do about it.

About this event

The aim of this seminar is to delve into the presence of Islamophobia in British society and examine its underlying causes.

Distinguished speakers for this event include Maqsood Ahmed (OBE), Dr Hafiz Ather Hussain al-Azahri and Amanda Morris.

We will explore:

  • Identifying signs of Islamophobia
  • Understanding its impact on the daily lives of Muslims
  • Collaborating to combat and overcome various forms of Islamophobia prevalent in our society

At the conclusion of the programme, food will be provided. Kindly inform us in advance if you have any specific dietary requirements

Maqsood Ahmed OBE

Maqsood Ahmed OBE is currently CEO of CDE Acumen, a consultancy company, and Head of Business Development at SHEWISE, a London-based Charity.

Maqsood Ahmed was appointed as the First Muslim Advisor to HM Prison Service and later senior Faiths Adviser to the Home Office in the Faith Communities Unit in 2003. One of the primary roles of this Unit was to engage with all Faith communities. Maqsood worked closely with Muslim and other faith communities on cohesion and inter-faith work, and the Unit was subsequently transferred to the Communities and Local Government Department.

He was awarded an OBE for his groundbreaking work as the first Muslim Advisor to HM Prison Service. He opened Prison Chaplaincies to reflect the ethnic representation in many Prisons. All UK prisons now have chaplains of all religions, including circa 300 Muslim Imams/chaplains who provide pastoral care to prisoners.

Maqsood is a Fellow of the University of London Goldsmiths’ College. He is passionate about interfaith. He is a Trustee of the UK Prison Reform Trust (2018 – present). He is also a Trustee of the Community Chaplaincy Association, UK (2018- Present), and Trustee of the World Congress of Faiths (2015-present). He writes in various publications and is co-author of several books, including ‘Inter-Faith Dialogue: An Islamic Perspective’ (2014), and ‘Why British Muslims Still Lagging Behind’ (2021).

Dr Hafiz Ather Hussain al-Azahri

Dr Hafiz Ather Hussain al-Azahri works as a freelance Imam, writer, teacher, and researcher.

Ather Hussain began his Islamic education by completing the memorisation of the Holy Qur’an at the age of thirteen. After completing his GCSEs, he moved to the seminary Jamia al-Karam, where he studied Arabic grammar under the guardianship of M.I.H. Pirzada and Mawlana Abdul-Bari Sahib. In 1995, he travelled to Bhera, Pakistan, and completed the traditional seminary course with First Class Honours.

Between 1996 and 1999, he studied at Al-Azhar University, Cairo, the oldest seat of Islamic learning in the world. He specialised in Hadith studies and graduated as a BA in Principles of Theology in 1999.

Upon returning to England, he joined the University of Birmingham to study for a BA in Political Science. He graduated with First Class Honours in 2003. In 2006, he completed his MPhil in Theology at the University of Birmingham on the al-Jami of al-Khatib al-Baghdadi. In July 2012, he completed his PhD in Theology on the Nuzha of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani at the same University.

He has talked on faith topics on several media platforms, including Sky News, BBC Breakfast, The Big Question, ITV Central, BBC Radio Five Live, and BBC Local Radio. Most of his time is now spent on literary projects. Over the last decade he has published over 18 books on Islam.

Amanda Morris

Amanda Morris is the Community Liaison Officer at the Muslim Council of Britain’s (MCB) Centre for Media Monitoring, where she supports Muslim community groups with media engagement, and delivers training to grassroots organisations. Prior to working with the MCB she was Media Liaison and Spokesperson for the Muslim Council of Wales.  Amanda is an experienced campaigner for human rights, and has an academic background in linguistics and sociology, holding an MA in Applied Japanese Linguistics from SOAS, and another in Islam in Britain from Cardiff University.
