Description

Join for a thought-provoking evening discussing “Hood Feminism” by Mikki Kendall, hosted by the incredible Yassmin Abdel-Magied!

About this event

“There’s nothing feminist about having so many resources at your fingertips and choosing to be ignorant. Nothing empowering or enlightening in deciding that intent trumps impact. Especially when the consequences aren’t going to be experienced by you, but will instead be experienced by someone from a marginalized community.” ― Mikki Kendall, Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot

Join this September as we analyse and reflect on Mikki Kendall’s insightful, incendiary and ultimately hopeful, ‘Hood Feminism’. The discussion will be led by Sudanese-Australian writer, engineer and award-winning social advocate, Yassmin Abdel-Magied.

We’re bringing together the Amaliah sisterhood to dissect the themes raised in Mikki Kendall’s work, including navigating intersectional identities, poverty, housing and education inequalities, Black feminism, building coalitions and much more. Yassmin will take us through the night with prompts and questions to guide us through these topics and to understand how to make meaningful change.

Come and connect with other Muslim women in a welcoming and familiar space to share your views and ideas on this book. Whether you’re a literature buff, someone who is looking to get back into reading or just starting out on your reading journey, or if you simply want to come for the discussion, there’s a seat for you at our table.

About the Book

Today’s feminist movement has a glaring blind spot, and paradoxically, it is women. Mainstream feminists rarely talk about meeting basic needs as a feminist issue, argues Mikki Kendall, but food insecurity, access to quality education, safe neighbourhoods, a living wage, and medical care are all feminist issues.

All too often, however, the focus is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. That feminists refuse to prioritize these issues has only exacerbated the age-old problem of internecine discord and women who rebuff carrying the title.

Moreover, prominent white feminists broadly suffer from their own myopia with regard to how things like race, class, sexual orientation, and ability intersect with gender. How can we stand in solidarity as a movement, Kendall asks, when there is the distinct likelihood that some women are oppressing others?

About The Amaliah Book Club

The Amaliah Book Club has been running online for over a year. We have been collating recommendations from our community and publishing book reviews by authors on a variety of topics and genres. In 2022, the Amaliah Book Club launched in-person to a sold-out event. The Amaliah Book Club aims to create a space for Muslim women to exchange ideas, reflect our thoughts and fall in love with reading in a safe and welcoming space. We hope you’ll join us on this journey!
