Mull? J?m? (N?r ad-D?n 'Abd ar-Rahm?n J?m?) was a renowned 15th-century(1414–1492 CE) Persian poet, scholar, and a master spiritual Sage. Born in Khorasan(Heart Afghanistan) in 1414 and studied in Samarkand, and served in the T?m?rid courts. He is widely celebrated as the last great classical poet of the Persian language (Kh?timat al-Shu'ar?). His poetry reflects deep devotion to the Prophet saw and profound spiritual insight. His literary legacy covers epic masnavis, lyrical divans, and influential spiritual treatises. Major poetic master pieces like the Haft Awrang (The Seven Thrones): His premier collection of seven didactic and romantic masnavis, which includes: Yusuf and Zulaikha, and Layla and Majnun, Silsilat al-Dhahab (The Chain of Gold), Tuhfat al-Ahrar (The Gift of the Noble), Salaman wa Absal (an allegorical romance). His work titled 'Al-Durrah al-F?khirah f? Ta?q?q Madhhab al-??f?yah wa-al-Mutakallim?n wa-al-?ukam?? al-Mutaqaddim?n' compares the views of Muslim theologians (mutakallim?n), philosophers (hukam??), and Sufis on core metaphysical questions, influenced by school of Ibn Arabi, arguing for the superior synthesis found in Sufism. He was highly respected by great rulers such as the Ottoman Sultan Fatih Mehmed II the Conqueror of Istanbul and his poetry works became popular and used in several schools from Samarqand to Istanbul(Al-Kafiya - commentary has been a staple of Ottoman Madrasas' curricula) to Khayr?b?d(Firangi Mahal) in India and throughout all the Gunpowder Empires such as the Ottomans, Safavid and Mughals.
This short intensive overview course will cover the following:

The Life and Works of ‘Abd al-Rahmân al-Jâmî’s (Mulla Jami’s) (817/1414-898/1492)
An Overview of Mulla Jami’s Sufi Metaphysics
Mulla Jami’s Influence on Ottoman Scholars
We will look at readings from al-Durrat al-Fâkhirah Fî Tahqîq Madhâhib al-Sûfiyya wa al-Mutakallimîn wa al-Hukmâ’ al-Mutaqaddimîn (The Precious Pearl Concerning an Investigation into the Views of the Sufis, the Theologians, and the Ancient or Former Philosophers)

About the course presenter:
*Professor Bilal Kuspinar
[Chair of the Department of Philosophy & Director of the International Rumi Center for the Study of Civilizations Necmettin Erbakan University, Konya,Turkey] received his B.A. in theology from Selçuk University, Konya, his M.A. in philosophy, logic and history of science from the Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, his first Ph.D. in the history of philosophy from Selçuk University, and his second Ph.D. in Islamic philosophy and mysticism from McGill University. He specializes in history of medieval philosophy and mysticism. His research investigates into various philosophical and mystical traditions flourished in Islamic civilization, especially within the context of the Ottoman intellectual milieu. Prior to joining Konya Necmettin Erbakan University, he taught at several academic institutions and universities, including Selcuk University, International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC), Kuala Lumpur, and Concordia and McGill Universities, Montreal, and Ahlia University, Bahrain. He has also participated in many international conferences and seminars in his field. In addition to his extensive contributions to the field of philosophy and humanity studies with his many articles, he has so far published three books: The Lamp of Mysteries (Misb?h al-Asr?r): A Commentary on the Light-Verse of the Qur'an: Arabic text critically edited, translated, and annotated. (Oxford: Anqa publishing, 2011) Ism?'?l Ankarav? on the Illuminative Philosophy: His Iz?hu'l-Hikem, Its Edition and Anaylsis in Comparison with Daww?n?'s Shaw?kil al-H?r, Together with the Translation of Suhraward?'s Hay?kil al-N?r. Kuala Lumpur: International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC), 1996. Ibn Sina'da Bilgi Teorisi (Avicenna's Theory of Knowledge). 2nd ed. Istanbul: MEB, 2001 (1st ed. in 1995). He was the Counsellor for Social and Religious Affairs at the Turkish Embassy Washington D.C. and Head of the Diyanet Center of America between 2019 - 2023.
