Introduction to Ethical Debating | MLF x Islaah Skills Workshop & Networking

This November, we are excited to host the fifth instalment of our MLF Debate Club, where we shall focus on what it means to "debate ethically."
The average person will have hundreds of debates throughout their lives - yet only a vanishingly small fraction of these will be formally moderated and in front of a live audience. Most will be unplanned debates with friends, family & colleagues where the discussion will rapidly switch from one topic to the next.
Using Shaykh Mikaeel Ahmed Smith’s framework of
Prophetic Listening,
our November
debate club shall be an interactive skills workshop
, exploring how we can apply Islamic ethical principles to firmly and respectfully engage another person who we fundamentally disagree with. Teams will explore different scenarios and debate topics - devising, comparing and challenging each others' approaches - along with plenty of opportunity for networking.
Our November debate club is kindly supported by
SOAS' very own Islaah Collective
.
Whether you’re completely new to debating or looking to refine your public speaking, our debate club sessions are especially beginner-friendly. Learn to structure coherent arguments, engage in peer-led discourse, and we can almost guarantee that you will be ready to dismantle logical fallacies with such efficiency that you could leave Piers Morgan shaking in his boots.
Designed to encourage critical thinking, respectful disagreement, and intellectual confidence, MLF's Debate Club will provide a space to engage seriously with some of the most important questions facing our communities today.
