RECITAL OF THE
MUWATTA’ OF IMAM MALIK WITH IJAZAH FROM SHAYKH AMMAR AL-SHINQITI
Join us for a rare opportunity to participate in the full recital of the Muwatta’ (Majlis of Sama’ - Gathering of Audition) over 3 days, with Ijazah from Shaykh ‘Ammar Al-Shinqiti. Also, including contributions from various other esteemed scholars, concluding with a special gathering of Salawat and Ijazah ceremony.
Shaykh ‘Ammar Salim Al-Shinqiti is a classically taught Mauritanian scholar, Maliki jurist, and is among the most distinguished scholars of our time. He has studied for decades under the pre-eminent scholars of Mauritania, and has remarkably memorised all of the major poems of every branch of knowledge and all seven Hadith collections.
The Shaykh is a member of the International Union of Islamic Scholars; Professor of Islamic Legal Theory (Us?l) & Maxims (Qawa’id) at As-Salam Institute. He is also the Professor of Islamic Jurisprudence at the European Institute for Human Sciences & also the Senior Imam of the “Muslim Welfare House” in London.
Shaykh ‘Ammar is committed to the revival of traditional Islamic scholarship through the study of classical texts, with a focus on the Maliki School of Jurisprudence. He is also one of the few English-speaking Mauritanian scholars in the World and is able to teach the Islamic Sciences to the highest level, in various languages (Arabic, French, English and Spanish).

What is
Al-Muwatta’
Al-Muwatta' (??????): “The Well-Trodden Path” or “The Approved,” is one of the earliest and most influential works in Islamic history. Compiled by the Luminary, Imam Malik ibn Anas, it is the oldest surviving collection of hadith and Islamic jurisprudence, establishing a foundational methodology for deriving Islamic law for generations to come.
What makes Al-Muwatta' unique among hadith collections is its emphasis on the 'amal; the living tradition of the people of Madinah. Imam Malik held that the continuous practice passed down by the Prophet’s Companions and preserved by the people of Madinah carried greater legal weight than an isolated hadith narration.
Historical Context
As legal opinions diverged across the expanding Islamic empire, the Abbasid Caliph Abu Ja'far al-Mansur asked Imam Malik to compile a balanced, widely accepted legal text. Over forty years, Imam Malik distilled around 100,000 narrations into fewer than 2,000, then had the work reviewed by seventy scholars of Medina, all of whom approved it, hence the title Al-Muwatta' ("The Approved").

Purpose
of this Event
This will be a
Majlis al-Sama? (Gathering of Audition)
; this is a traditional ceremonious practice in which a classical text is recited in full before a qualified scholar. During this gathering, the complete Arabic text of Al-Muwatta' will be read aloud while Shaykh ‘Ammar Al-Shinqiti listens, corrects recitation, explains difficult passages, and offers concise insights into its legal and spiritual teachings.
Preservation: Sacred knowledge has always been transmitted through direct teacher-student chains. The isnad (chain of transmission) preserves both the authenticity of the text and the continuity of its teaching. By hearing Al-Muwatta' recited before a scholar connected through this chain, participants help preserve a living tradition that stretches back to the earliest generations of Islam.
Blessing: Reciting Al-Muwatta' is a deeply spiritual act, with participants sending abundant blessings (salawat) upon the Beloved Prophet throughout the
gathering. Such assemblies, devoted to the remembrance of Allah and the teachings of His Messenger, are a means of attaining barakah (spiritual blessings), spiritual connection and renewal.
IJAZAH:
Participants who attend the complete reading attentively will receive an ijazah (formal authorisation) at its conclusion. This certification places them within an unbroken chain of transmission through Shaykh ‘Ammar Al-Shinqiti to Imam Malik, and ultimately to the Blessed Prophet . It is both an honour and a responsibility to preserve and faithfully transmit this sacred tradition.
