وَلَا تَحْسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ أَمْوَٰتًۢاۚ بَلْ أَحْيَآءٌ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ

And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allāh as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision. (Qur’an, Al-Imran:169)

Sumayyah bint Khayyat رضي الله عنها was the first martyr in Islam and her incredible story is an inspiration to all Muslims. She is a symbol of strength, courage, and devotion that Muslims have shown in the early days of Islam. The Prophet ﷺ often spoke of the family of Sumayyah رضي الله عنها in the highest terms of praise.

Be patient, O family of Yassir! For your destination is Paradise.” – Prophet Muhammad ﷺ [Ibn Majah]

From being despised by society and mistreated worse than a stray dog by those around her, Sumayyah رضي الله عنها was elevated by Allah to the highest ranks in Jannah. She attained the highest status a believer can achieve. She was the first to die in the path of Allah. Sumayyah رضي الله عنها a former Abyssian, elderly slave woman, considered the lowest by the disbelievers of Makkah but was the first martyr of Islam.

SPEAKER PROFILE:

Ustadha Ameena Blake (Sheffield, UK)

Ustadha Ameena is a Muslim scholar with a Masters degree in Islamic Studies. Other qualifications include: BA English Studies, PG in Teaching & MSc in Leadership and Management.

She is a Director of the Eden House UK (EHUK) – A women’s refuge project. She also serves as a Chaplain in The University of Sheffield, South Yorkshire Police & lectures in Islamic Studies at Markfield Institute of Higher Education.

Ustadha teaches across the globe at, courses & conferences as well as on social media and is a regular on Islam Channel. She is an instructor for Al Balagh Academy, Roots Academy and the Lead Program.

Ustadha has sat on several Mosque boards over the past two decades and served as ASG of the Muslim Council of Britain as well as sitting as an Islamic advisor on various platforms.

She was given the Beacon Mosque, Most impactful Aalimah award in 2022 and is part of the Sheffield University Inspirational Women 2024.
