About this event
Join to learn the traditional techniques of Islamic manuscript bookbinding.
This is an introductory workshop where you will get to examine selected manuscripts in person and learn the basic techniques of constructing a traditional Islamic manuscript. From collating the pages into signatures and sewing them into a textblock, to creating and attaching a binding with the traditional pentagonal ‘envelope’ flap – you will create your own notebook to take home and enjoy.
This workshop will be run by Dr Neelam Hussain, Curator of the Mingana Collection of Middle Eastern Manuscripts at the Cadbury Research Library, University of Birmingham. She is a specialist in Islamic manuscripts and material culture.
There is a special ‘Early Bird’ discounted rate for registrations before midnight 9th September 2023 – after this the full ticket price applies. All proceeds from this workshop will go towards our fund to open and run our new gallery space in Balsall Heath.
The workshop consists of 3 hours of teaching with a half-hour optional break for refreshments. All materials and light refreshments will be provided.
‘Early Bird’ Tickets: £60 (+£4.76 ticket fees)
Standard Ticket: £75 (+£5.80 ticket fees)
