The Royal Institution, 21 Albemarle Street, London W1S 4BS, United Kingdom
Description
Explore complex geometry by creating amazing Islamic artworks.
About this event
Islamic Geometric Patterns have adorned palaces, madrassas and mosques and illuminated Manuscripts from Spain across to China from the 8th century till now. We will explore & draw historical patterns using a compass and straightedge, the same tools that would have been used by countless geometers & artisans for centuries across the Islamic Lands.
We begin by familiarising ourselves with the tools and a run through of the processes and practicalities involved with examples of potential outcomes. On a blank sheet of paper, we will then draw a series of lines and circles to construct the underlying grid. From this underlying grid a range of patterns can be drawn. We will outline, trace, transfer and tessellate seamlessly one of them to bring to life with colour with watercolours and gouache on watercolour paper.
This workshop is strictly for 12–14 year-olds and will include a 30 minute lunch break. Students should bring lunch and a drink.
Refunds can only be issued for tickets cancelled at least two weeks (14 calendar days) in advance of the event date. Please note that this supersedes our normal event terms and conditions.
