A powerful storm has triggered devastating flooding in Libya. Up to 20,000 are feared to have lost their lives so far, with fears that the death toll will continue to rise.

Around ten thousand people are still missing, and the country is in a state of extreme emergency. The death toll is rising by the hour, as more information emerges.

At least 150 homes have been destroyed so far, leaving many families highly vulnerable.

The eastern cities of Benghazi, Sousse, Derna and Al-Marj have all been affected. There has been extensive damage to the infrastructure with roads and bridges destroyed. Schools and shops have been ordered to close.

The city of Derna is home to approximately 100,000 people – where reportedly two dams have collapsed, submerging much of the area. Over 3,000 Derna residents are feared to have died in the disaster, which has been described by Libyan government minister Hisham Chkiouat as, “like a tsunami”.

Islamic Relief’s response

Islamic Relief is working with local partners on the ground and delivering urgently needed relief like mattresses and blankets, food packs, and other vital aid to affected communities.

We have already committed an initial £100,000 to provide emergency aid.

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck the High Atlas region in Morocco at 11.11 pm on 8th September 2023. Over 3,000 people have died – a grim death toll that is likely to rise in the days ahead.

Many of the dead are thought to be in remote villages in the High Atlas mountains, the epicentre of the earthquake. The epicentre was in the High Atlas Mountains, 71km (44 miles) south-west of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5km. The earthquake killed people in the provinces and municipalities of al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant.

Residents are using whatever equipment they can find as they struggle to reach their neighbours under the rubble. Blocked roads are preventing ambulances from reaching the wounded, and while officials are scrambling to clear debris, rescue and relief efforts are difficult amid the mountainous terrain, risk of landslides, and large distances.

Islamic Relief’s response

Through our assessments so far, Islamic Relief has identified that the main needs are providing those affected with sufficient food to eat and temporary shelters for those whose homes have been destroyed. Nights are cold in the mountains, and conditions are expected to worsen with winter looming, so survivors are in urgent need of blankets.

We have launched a major £10 million emergency appeal to provide aid to survivors of the devastating earthquake in Morocco.

We are partnering with local humanitarian organisations to deliver aid, in coordination with the Moroccan authorities who are leading the overall response.

So far we have distributed mattresses, blankets and hygiene kits to survivors in remote mountainous areas who are still sleeping outside after the devastating earthquake.
