Course Overview

This empowering 6-week online course explores the critical need for Muslim communities to embrace a future-focused vision rooted in self-sufficiency, sustainability, and a deep connection to faith. We’ll delve into the challenges posed by modern society, including the illusion of separation, the grip of capitalism, and the impact of globalization. Through engaging discussions and practical applications, we’ll uncover the principles of Permaculture, local economies, and Islamic teachings to chart a path towards resilient and thriving communities.

By the end of this course, you will:

  • Understand the interconnectedness of our world and the shortcomings of current societal systems.
  • Gain practical knowledge of Permaculture principles and their application in building self-sufficient communities.
  • Discover the Islamic foundations for environmental stewardship and sustainable living.
  • Develop strategies for establishing local food systems, including food banks and farmers markets.
  • Explore the concept of Hijra in the context of rising Islamophobia and community building.
  • Cultivate a “Muslim Polymath” mindset – embracing knowledge from various disciplines to create positive change.

Course Contents:

Week 1: Reclaiming Our Vision – The Crisis of Perception & The Call to Return

  • Unmasking the Illusion of Separation: Recognizing the interconnectedness of humanity and the natural world.
  • Re-evaluating Progress: Critiquing the dominant paradigm of capitalism, globalization, and its impact on communities.
  • The COVID-19 Wake-Up Call: Examining the vulnerabilities exposed by the pandemic and the urgency for change.
  • Returning to the Land: Understanding the spiritual and practical significance of connecting with nature.

Week 2: Shifting Paradigms – Embracing Systems Thinking & Ecological Economics

  • Thinking Like an Ecosystem: Applying systems thinking to understand the interconnectedness of our actions and their consequences.
  • Ecology and Economics Intertwined: Exploring the principles of ecological economics and the need for local currencies.
  • The Power of Local: Building resilient local economies through community-based initiatives and resource sharing.
  • Food Sovereignty: Reclaiming control over our food systems through sustainable agriculture and local food production.

Week 3: The Permaculture Pathway – Designing Abundant & Regenerative Systems

  • Introduction to Permaculture: Understanding the ethics, principles, and design methods of Permaculture.
  • Social Permaculture: Applying Permaculture principles to design thriving and resilient communities.
  • Creating Abundance: Learning practical techniques for food production, water harvesting, and renewable energy.
  • Building Resilience: Developing strategies for adapting to climate change and mitigating environmental challenges.

Week 4: Islamic Foundations – Uboodiyyah Kawniyya & Environmental Stewardship

  • The Quran and the Environment: Exploring Islamic teachings on the importance of environmental stewardship and sustainability.
  • Uboodiyyah Kawniyya: Understanding our role as caretakers of the Earth and fulfilling our responsibility to creation.
  • Islamic Models of Sustainability: Learning from historical and contemporary examples of sustainable practices in Muslim societies.
  • Sustainable Consumption: Applying Islamic principles to make mindful choices about our consumption habits.

Week 5: Building Community – Food Banks, Farmers Markets & The Spirit of Dawah

  • Local Food Systems: Developing strategies for establishing local food banks and farmers markets as community hubs.
  • Food as Dawah: Utilizing food initiatives as a means of outreach, fostering understanding, and building bridges within and outside the Muslim community.
  • The Importance of Collaboration: Building partnerships with local organizations and individuals to strengthen community initiatives.
  • Cultivating Self-Reliance: Empowering communities to become self-sufficient and less reliant on external systems.

Week 6: Navigating the Future – Hijra, Islamophobia & The Muslim Polymath

  • Hijra in the 21st Century: Reframing the concept of Hijra in the context of rising Islamophobia and the need for safe and supportive communities.
  • The Camouflaged Food Forest: Exploring innovative approaches to food security and resilience in uncertain times.
  • Cultivating a Muslim Polymath Mindset: Embracing knowledge from various disciplines to become effective agents of change.
